In March 2014, Eric Larsen and Ryan Waters set out to traverse nearly 500 miles across the melting Arctic Ocean, unsupported, from Northern Ellesmere Island to the geographic North Pole. Despite being one of the coldest and most hostile environments on the planet, the Arctic Ocean has seen a steady and significant reduction of sea ice over the past seven years due to climate change. Because of this, Larsen’s, and Waters’ trip—dubbed the “Last North Expedition” has to date been the last full (from land) human-powered trek to the North Pole since that time.

War in Europe, the Middle East, and Sub-Saharan Africa, a global economy and institutional structure gone sideways, an America gone tribal and a rising China: right now, there is a lot to be confused and worried about. But hasn’t that always been the case? This presentation will explore the question of what, if anything, is fundamentally different about today’s world. Are we just in a period of particular turmoil, or have we in fact reached a tipping period in world history, when the Enlightenment values and institutions that have informed recent history are fading, and a new world looms? If that is the case, can we say anything about the challenges and opportunities such a seismic change in the world order might create?
