The USGS TRIGA® Reactor (GSTR) is a low-enriched uranium, pool-type research reactor that has been in operation since the late 1960s. It supports nuclear-based research for the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities across the country. The reactor plays a critical role in advancing analytical techniques by providing data on geologic, plant, and animal specimens. GSTR is one of the few U.S. research reactors capable of processing a large volume of samples and is the only reactor in the Department of the Interior, as well as the only one within a 350-mile radius of Denver, Colorado. The facility supports USGS science and delivers impartial data to resource managers, planners, and other stakeholders worldwide.
